Picasa adds Face Recognition

Google's Picasa is seeing updates on both the web- and desktop-based versions of the popular photo management application. The biggest new feature is coming to Picasa Web Albums in the form of people tagging, a Facebook-style tool that lets you tag faces in your photos by name and then view pictures of that person by simply searching. The difference between this and Facebook is that Google identifies all of the faces in your pictures automatically and groups together the faces that it thinks are the same, making people tagging extremely quick and easy to do. According to technology web site CNET, Google will also be releasing a new beta version of Picasa for the desktop today, the main improvements to which include a movie maker and online synchronization of every edit of a photo. The download isn't showing up for me yet, but people tagging is live, so give it a try and let's hear what you think in the comments.

Atom vs. Athlon -- AMD Wins!

Tom's Hardware pit the Intel Atom processor and a low-wattage Athlon processor against each other to perhaps surprising results. The site found that the 1GHz Athlon 64 2000+, with its 8 watt power draw, bests the 1.6GHz Atom 230 -- both in terms of performance and enery consumed. The comparison concludes that "The Achilles heel of the Intel system is its old system platform with the 945GC chipset, while AMD offers a more modern 780G platform". The author Bert Toepelt, further adds that the AMD platform was able to run fine without a fan. He notes that while the AMD chip requires more power than the Atom processor, AMD's system -- as a whole -- requires less energy both when idle and under load because of its chipset.

While such a platform would make for an ideal HTPC setup, the only negative is that the 780G chip powering the AMD platform is currently only available in the microATX; Intel is also present on the miniITX board.

Photoshop for video

Graduates at the University of Washington have proposed a system for editing and enhancing videos using still photographs as a reference

aamartech

Eight graduates from the University of Washington have proposed a system which, at face-value, appears to do for video, what an image-editing tool such as Photoshop does for still photographs. The system makes use of reference photographs to edit and improve on a video scene quality.

The technique presented can be used to transfer a photograph's strengths such as better lighting, high dynamic range and high resolution, on to a video. The system also allows a users to edit a video by modifying just a few scenes -- remove unwanted objects, or eliminate camera shake, for example -----------

Yahoo's Fire Eagle

Yahoo's Fire Eagle stepped out of closed beta for all to use. Fire Eagle is essentially a location broker: it provides location information through devices and services and makes them available as a platform. Developers can then tap into this platform and integrate the location information into their software. One could, for example, make a social platform which tracks the location of its members and lets one friend know where another in.

aamartech

As you might imagine, a service such as this throws up a lot of privacy concerns. Imagine being able to be tracked by a boss, or colleague, or your better half... To that end, Yahoo has offered a range of privacy options to the end-users. There is also a double opt-in method for the service itself -- you need to sign in to Fire Eagle itself or to a service that integrates the location-aware platform. Moreover, every end-user can choose to expose levels of his or her locations: either an exact location, or a general area information, or a complete information blackout -- which deletes the user's footsteps from the system completely.

Quite a few services and sites have already integrated Fire Eagle into their offerings. Check them out here

iPhone app for $1000

In what is surely a poke at the powers that be -- software developer Armin Heinrich, has released an application for the iPhone that does pretty much nothing, for a low, low price of $1000.

The application is nothing but a display of a glowing red ruby, and is called I Am Rich, clicking on the little i in the corner of the app is supposed to bring up a secret mantra to "help you to stay rich, healthy, and successful". As Harry McCracken, of Technologizer, who brought us this story puts it: "Unless Heinrich decides to hand out reviewer's copies of I Am Rich, I may never learn what that mantra is."

A new way of purchase

The sport of the moment would appear to be triathlon. Not only is it one event in which us Brits might do OK in Beijing, but it's the in thing for total body fitness and overall wellbeing.

Swimming, running and cycling, at a basic level, are things that most people can do (except me - the bike kept pulling me under...) and indeed you don't really need specialist equipment to get started.

aamartech

But as the bug bites, which I'm assured by friends and colleagues that it does, with a vengeance, you'll be wanting to stock up on all the right gear.

This is the place to come for the best wetsuits, carbon framed bikes and of course the obligatory Lycra shorts and running shoes.

Go on, do something different this weekend.

All-screen concept clamshell phone

A cell phone concept design termed Plica by James Piatt shows what a phone with just a screen would look like.

aamartech

This concept, which has dual touch screens and no physical buttons is a compelling idea and seems like the most logical way to solve the problem of having large screens while still maintaining a user interface. Maybe he was 'inspired' by the forthcoming V12 designs as well.

Moving balcony

For those of you who are always looking for the next luxury product to one-up your friends, you may be interested in the newest addition to Country Coach’s line of luxury motor coaches.

aamartech

A high-end motor coach is the Rolls Royce of the RV industry. I’m sure you’ve seen those opulent homes on wheels that give a new meaning to the word “roughing it”. They have automated pull out sections that turn a semi-cramped space into a roomy and relaxing haven in the ummm… great outdoors.

But now you can add a private balcony to your list of amenities. Though I still like the awnings with your own private space outside, the idea of pushing a button and having your own veranda in about 20 seconds is pretty appealing too.

The Country Coach Veranda series has been designed to transform your living area into a luxury suite. At its core, the Veranda deck is a 4′6″ wide by 13″ deep steel platform on railings. By lowering the coach’s side wall, the space is separated from the interior by 12ft glass doors. These doors can be opened wide to expand the living space further.

As I’m reading the literature on the product I can see that the balcony deck can hold up to 3000 pounds of weight so you should be fine when you invite the local bear for a glass of wine on the balcony.

The steel deck is dual-layer and covered in vinyl so it’s easy to clean (or easier to clean because nothing about cleaning a motor coach is easy). There are also options you can add to your Veranda to customize it further. How about a LP stainless steel barbecue, or a 37″ high-definition LCD TV?

The luxury motor coach industry just reached a new level with the Country Coach Veranda. Now, if they can just find a way to get my retractable Pilates Reformer and spinning bike in there.

Scrabulous now Wordscraper

Few days ego we post a topic about legal notice for a facebook's popular aps scrabulous. In what's turning into a cat and mouse game of legalese and fine print -- the Calcutta bros. behind Scrabulous have just relaunched their Facebook game as Wordscraper.

aamartech

Changes made include using circle tiles, customizable boards, and different point values for letters. Our take on this mess is this: can't the two just get along? Surely Hasbro can license the Scrabble name to what is an able game engine? The why-not here could be that Hasbro had entered into a deal with Electronic Arts to produce a Scrabble online game; also available on Facebook. This was incidentally, just before Hasbro sued the boys behind Scrabulous.
