Download Apple iTunes 7.7

All Apple Mac, iPod, iPod Touch and iPhone owners pay attention! iTunes version 7.7.1 is now available for download here.

aamartech

Interestingly, this follows the buzz of Apple's DRM being cracked for iPhone. Bunch of hackers claimed cracking Apple's FairPlay DRM on Sega's recent iPhone-exclusive Super Monkey Ball.

However, the hack for the jailbroken iPhone 2.0 using SSH received a mixed reaction from enthusiast users as it worked only for some who downloaded the pirated version of game. About the iTunes, no further details were available on whether this update will improve performance-bound new features or offer greater stability.

Social Networking for Scientists

If somebody said social networking was all about finding a new date and throwing virtual pies at each other, think again. Of course, social networking sites are dominated by folks who do things like these, but is there space on such sites to discuss other things? You know, everyday topics like nuclear physics, quantum mechanics and Chaos theory?

aamartech

Scientists have long been stereotyped as extremely private individuals, holed up in their labs researching the next big world saver or world destroyer (depending on whether you're talking about Dr. Strangelove or Q) all day. The guys at Labmeeting seem to think they'd like to meet colleagues and share their work.

After all, Mark Kaganovich is not one to all for these stereotypes. A Harvard graduate student with degrees in Biochemistry and Computer Ccience, set out to two years ago create Labmeeting - a meeting place that allows scientists and students to easily upload stacks of papers, protocols, and notes in their offices that they pass around as PDFs, organize them, search them, and share them. Scientists can create groups, and invite other members of their labs to create a common repository of papers that can be accessed from anywhere. Each scientist has his own profile page and can recommend papers to colleagues, mark them up, create collections, and follow what other scientists are collecting.

Although Labmeeting is free for individual scientists and students at the moment, Kaganovich eventually plans to charge a subscription fee to corporate users such as drug and biotech companies.

Speed up file copying with TeraCopy

Teracopy is a brilliant tool for speed up your file transfer. Windows only: Free file-copying utility TeraCopy speeds up file transfers and can pause, resume and test file copy operations.

aamartech

With TeraCopy you can:

Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives.

Pause and resume file transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.

Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skips the file, not terminating the entire transfer.

You can also use TeraCopy to diff the contents of two directories by running a "Test" copy, which shows you which files exist in the destination directory as compared to the source. If you've ever had Windows fail at the very last minute of a multi-gigabyte file copy, TeraCopy's for you. TeraCopy is a free download for home use for Windows.

Kallout - a bater web search

Small utility KallOut integrates into popular desktop programs such as Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer and Firefox and lets you search the web for text found there. Simply highlight text inside the application (like PowerPoint) and right click to choose your search engine. Here's a video demonstration of the integration:

Kallout embeds searches for Google, Yahoo, Windows Live Search, Wikipedia, Dictionary.com, IMDB, Amazon, Craiglist, eBay, Flickr, Photobucket, YouTube, Metacafe, Google Maps, Virtual Earth, and dozens more into a simple right click menu that is accessible in programs outside your web browser. KallOut is a free download for Windows only.

New iPod touch

More rumors about the Apple corporation - this time hinting at a new iPod touch. Some text strings in the beta release of the iPhone OS 2.1 make reference to an iPod2,1 and since the current touch is designated iPod1,1 that's a strong hint that a new model is coming. Though it's pretty obvious that they would bring out a new model anyway, it's unlikely that they would do anything to endanger their iPhone sales. It would be interesting to see just what more they can do to make it seem a better deal than the existing Touch.

Scrabulous sign off from facebook

The latest update on the ongoing Hasbro-Scrabulous dispute is that Facebook has finally taken down the Scrabulous application. According to Facebook, the decision to block the application has been taken by the game developers themselves, reports ContentSutra.

aamartech

Anyone in US and Canada who tries to open the application on Facebook is now served with a message reading "Scrabulous is disabled for U.S. and Canadian users until further notice. If you would like to stay informed about developments in this matter, please click here." The click here link leads you to a form from the game founder asking you to leave your email id for further updates on the matter.

In the midst of all this, EA launched the "officially sanctioned" Scrabble game on Facebook on the same day when Hasbro filed the lawsuits against Scrabulous developers based in India. The timing of the launch doesn't seem to a mere coincidence. The lawsuit against Scrabulous was a well-planned move, writes TechCrunch.

Copy/paste come to iPhone

It's the biggest worry of the many aspiring iPhone owners, a simple task such as copy/paste (in notes) that was till now missing from the list of many to-dos of the most awaited phone.

aamartech

Apparently, the iPhone 2.1, still in the beta testing stage will allow just that. However, this is not likely to appear in effect anytime soon. Still, it will make a heck of a difference.

Another interesting news is that you can also use third party apps like Magicpad from software creator Proximi that will allow you to do the same. It's an application, much like the notes, only it has multiple fonts support and of course the copy/paste feature.

Animetion for web

Aniboom ShapeShifter is a free, online shape shifting animation application which lets you animate your own “shape shifted” frame by frame sequence.

aamartech

With ShapeShifter, you can create frame by frame animation through the use of black and white geometric shapes. The geometric shapes can be manipulated so that you can change their size, angle, and placement in reference to the other chosen shapes, allowing you to create an animated character or image of your choice.

After creating the image you can add sound, save your creation on the website, and send the URL link to your friends. You can also receive ratings from the other viewers. All this can be done online without having to download the application onto your computer.

Stylus for your iPhone

I share an equal disdain for the stylus and I find that even my fat fingers work well enough on a iPhone. Some people don’t, though. If you’ve always wanted a stylus for your iPhone or iPod touch, here’s one for $25.

aamartech

That might sound like a lot of money for a stick, but it’s a stick made of "a lightweight aluminum alloy, with an anodized finish in your choice of three colors" and includes laser-engraved graphics and "a soft, durable tip designed with the needs of mobile users in mind." Plus, there’s that clip thing that holds it in place.

Cuil - all new search engine

Former Google engineer Tom Costello has unveiled a new search engine claiming to offer the biggest web index with 120 billion web pages - three times more than other search engines, including Google.

aamartech

A startup technology company, Cuil (pronounced COOL) is led by the husband-and-wife team of Tom Costello and Anna Patterson. Before founding Cuil, Costello researched and developed search engines at Stanford University and IBM, while Patterson was the architect of Google's large search index and led a web page ranking team.

The new challenger to Google's throne promises to offer organized and relevant results based on web page content analysis. Going beyond link analysis and traffic ranking, Cuil analyzes the context of each page and the concepts behind each query. It then organizes similar search results into groups and sorts them by category. Users are provided with a richer display of results and features such as tabs to clarify subjects, images to identify topics and search refining suggestions to guide then through the results. Check out Cuil's features to know more.

iPhone comes in india 18 Aug

So after much digging, we've got information on the official date for the India launch of the iPhone 3G.

aamartech

Vodafone will launch the iPhone 3G first on the 18th of August. Pricing and other essentials are still unknown. But worry not, we at Tech2 will keep you posted. You'll know as soon as we do.

Most expensive iPhone apps

At $449, MyAccountsToGo Dynamics GP and MyAccountsToGo SAP BusinessOne are the most expensive iPhone Apps available as of right now. It's under the Finance category and is designed for sales, marketing and finance people to access their transactions, statements, and other corporate terms that we have no clue about. Since the most we know about "business" is "business time", we can't say whether or not the $449 is worth the cash, but we do know that you should buy both apps and just make it an even $898. There's a free version if you want to know what the excitement's all about. Just don't accidentally buy the paid version.

macbook touch in october

Few days ago we post a topic about the new product comes to apple family. There have been rumors flying that a MacBook touch could be hitting the market as early as October. Allegedly these rumors are substantiated too, as they came from a MacDailyNews source that broke the wireless iTunes story early as well.

aamatech

"Think MacBook screen, possibly a bit smaller, in glass with iPhone-like, but fuller-featured Multi-Touch. Gesture library. Full Mac OS X. This is why they bought P.A. Semi. Possibly with Immersion's haptic tech. Slot-loading SuperDrive. Accelerometer. GPS. Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at "low" price that will reduce margins. Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will. This is some sick shit. App Store-compatible, able to run Mac apps, too. By October at the latest. "

Yahoo music store close September

Yahoo has announced the closure of its music store, leaving users unable to access the songs they have purchased. Starting, September 30 users will not be able to purchase songs from the Yahoo Music Unlimited Store.

Songs and albums that are purchased through Yahoo Music Unlimited Store are protected by a Digital Rights Management (DRM) system that requires a valid license key for playing them on the PC. The company will be taking off this license key servers offline on the same day the store shuts.

After the store closes, users will not have access to these license keys. So the purchased tracks will continue playing on the existing authorized PCs but not on any other machine. Moreover, re-licensing these songs will not be possible, which means users won't be able to play the songs if they change or update their PCs' operating system. In order to deal with this, Yahoo has recommended users to back up their purchased tracks to an audio CD before the store closes.

An important point is that this deadline affects only those who bought individual music tracks from the store. Though the store will be shut, the subscription users will still be able to purchase and stream music through Rhapsody. For details on the Yahoo-Rhapsody deal click here

With this announcement coming from Yahoo, the death of DRM technology seems imminent. Earlier this year, Microsoft had also announced the closing of MSN music store after August 31 this year, but decided to keep the DRM authorization servers running through 2011. Read more on the death of DRM here.

New product from Apple later this year

Apple, through its quarterly call to investors teased on something big coming up later this year. Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's chief financial officer, explained why the company expects its gross profit margin to drop from 34.8 per cent in the three months ended in June to 30 per cent in the next quarter, stating that it was due to "a future product transition, which I can't discuss today." Apple executives hinted that this new product would offer price points that will beat the competition. The company's strategy is to deliver state-of-the-art tech at a reasonable cost, he said. While Apple has traditionally priced its products at a premium, it has seen greater traction at lower prices: The company sold 11 million iPods in the most recent quarter, but iPod revenue only grew by 7 per cent because most of the increase in sales came from the low-end Shuffle model which saw its price cut to $49 early this year. The executives said that the company's computers are priced more competitively now than at any time in the last few years.

Tim Cook, the chief operating officer, explained this pricing philosophy, "One of the investments we make is to introduce new products that initially cost more because they delivery an entirely new level of value to the customer. Then we ride the cost curves down with value engineering and volume manufacturing, leaving us far head of our competitors. We have some of these types of investments in front of us that I can't discuss. And we will continue to execute this strategy in the future."

The new product hinted at, is expected to arrive by this September. It is widely speculated to be a web tablet of sorts -- a product with the touch interface of an iPhone, but with a larger form factor approaching that of a laptop.

Make your own grafiti

Do you like grafiti just try this website At some point you must’ve seen a piece of graffiti and thought, “wow, I wish I could have a go at that”. Well, now you can. You’re given a blank virtual wall and a set of artist’s implements ranging from brushes to spray cans to even a paintball gun to let rip with your artistic prowess. The only limitation is the amount of paint you can use.

aamartech

At first this might seem a bit stingy, but the idea is for you to create a piece of art and then pass it on to your friends and see what they can add to it. The creation keeps going until somebody decides it’s finished and calls a halt. It’s then published in the online gallery for the whole world to see. Chek out this gallary

New kindle will come in October

There is a rumor that Amazon's Kindle line of e-book readers are likely to get new additions this October. The first model will be an update of the current model, with a larger screen size and an improved interface.

aamartech

The second new model will be considerably larger, shaped like an 8.5inch x 11inch piece of paper but will not be released for another year. There is currently no word on pricing for either of the models. The distinctive feature of the Kindle is that it can connect to the net to download e-books unlike the others which need to sync with a PC for new e-books

Microsoft+Yahoo = $33

After having dismissed the proposal from Microsoft and Carl Icahn as all "smoke and mirrors" less than a week ago, Yahoo has signaled a stepdown.

In latest developments, Yahoo wrote a letter to investors saying the board is open to a full takeover of the company at $33 per share. As for a transaction of the search business alone, the board will consider it as long as it "provides real value to our stockholders".

Yahoo's board is working on the investors' behalf, and trying to create a partnership with market leader Google. Yahoo is also exploring other ways of boosting the company's value, signaling a possible sale of its Asian assets.

Unless CEO Jerry Yang gets shareholders on his side in the next two weeks, he risks ouster by Icahn at the annual meeting on August 1.

While Microsoft had initially offered $44.6 billion, at $31 per share, for all of Yahoo in January. The bid later went up to $33 per share, and was finally abandoned when Yang's asking rate went up. Since then, there have been repeated attempts from Microsoft to buy out Yahoo, which Yang has warded off.

Faced with intense buyout bidding, Yahoo climbed 94 cents to $22.48 on Wednesday in Nasdaq, while Microsoft advanced $1.11 to $27.26. The world's largest software maker is scheduled to report results on Thursday after the market closes.

Under the Microsoft proposal, Yahoo would have received at least $2.3 billion in shared revenue from the search assets annually over five years. Yahoo revealed the Microsoft offer would have generated about $300 million a year in cash, which compares with the maximum of $450 million annually that Yahoo expects to make from its search advertising partnership with Google.

Laptop from V12 Design

V12 Design, an industrial design firm is working on version 2 of its Canova laptop. Not heard of it? It had a dual-touch screen form and all the pictures are of the older model, as the company has not released pictures of the new version. The company says they've improved on the design since then, but it will still be 16 months before they release the new version.

They claim haptic feedback from the LCD meant to show the keyboard among other things that no other laptop has today. A massive bonus as anyone who's used a touch screen knows. Let's hope they can deliver on time, this long wait is likely to be worth it.

Virtual World from Google

aamartech

Although not directly comparable to the well-established Second Life, new entrants services like IMVU, and Lively, are expected to kick off the battle for Virtual World supremacy. However, all three have a long way to go before they reach the sophistication and features offered by Second Life.

With Lively, users can start building their worlds from scratch or use some of the Sample Rooms already created by Google. Unlike Second Life, there is no single world where users can move around. However, you can choose to invite your friends and stream personal images and videos.

As of now, only Windows XP and Vista with Internet Explorer or Firefox are supported.

Mario comes to song

Windows/Mac: Freeware application MarioPaint Composer is a remake of the old-school Mario Paint game for the Super NES, but this one runs on your desktop. More specifically, it mimics the music generator feature of Mario Paint, which creates loops on a musical bar with different sounds tied to classic Nintendo icons.

aamartech

The download page claims that it's available for Windows and Mac, though when I followed the Mac link it just downloaded the Windows version, so your mileage may vary. MarioPaint Composer is freeware, Windows and (maybe) Mac only. If you don't have any composition chops, it's still worth a download just to listen to the familiar classic that's loaded by default.

LG Chocolate 3

World'd largest fountain

In Dubai, they're doing things big these days. Big hotels, big palm tree islands, big wallets, and very soon, big $281 million fountains. The biggest one in the world, in fact, and it will be large enough to give the famed fountains at the Bellagio in Las Vegas an inferiority complex.

aamartech

At 825 feet long, the unnamed fountain will be 25% larger than the Bellagio fountain. Powering the fountain will be pumps capable of shooting columns of water approximately 450 or so feet into the dry Middle Eastern air. A light and sound show produced by a network of 6,600 lights and 50 projectors will illuminate the burgeoning Dubai skyline at night. About 22,000 gallons of water are expected to cycle through the fountain at any given time when it is completed in 2009. Now, if you'll excuse me, nature calls.

Bookmark Previews creates previews each time you visit a bookmark, but since your previews will be empty when you first install it, it can also create previews for all of your bookmarks automatically in the background. Bookmark Previews is free, works wherever Firefox does.

At least one person (an apparent couple with a baby) stated that "their goal is to set a record for time in line and possibly the first baby to wait with them."
